General Meeting via ZOOM 10/17/2020 2-4 pm

Our next general meeting will be via ZOOM again.  Check the Seanachai for the link to the meeting.   The meeting will be held October 17 at 2 pm. Mary will start the meeting at 1:45 so plan to join early and the early birds can chat and catch up with each other.  Christina White will be our program speaker.  We noticed a few people had trouble logging on the last meeting so we have designated a Board member to help.  If you need help logging onto the meeting please email irishclubpdx@gmail.com so we can assist you.

Christmas Luncheon 12/5/2020 1- 4 pm

Holiday Cheer

The AICS invites you to the annual Christmas luncheon on SATURDAY December 5, 2020. As of this time we are able to schedule the event within the confines of current public health policy. We are happy to report it will be at the Monarch Hotel from 1-4 pm on SATURDAY 12/5/2020.

The Monarch has taken precautions to insure the space is safe. From upgrading its air filtration system, to extra cleanings they are doing all they can to insure a safe space. We can also open the doors for added ventilation. This year we will be served a plated meal instead of the buffet. Again an extra precaution we are taking to insure your safety. Dinner will be Salad, Turkey dinner with all the trimmings and dessert.

We will need to wear masks when not eating; sanitizer will be on each table.

In order to not incur extra charges we are asking that members who want to attend the dinner pay by 11/7/2020.  The cost of dinner will be the same as last year $25.00 for members and $30.00 for guests. Please make your check out to AICS and send to Julie O’Connell.

We encourage each member to decide whether or not to attend based on their individual risk factors. The AICS and the Monarch will do all it can to keep everyone as safe as possible. We will have smaller tables placed farther apart, a plated meal instead of a buffet, sanitizer on each table.  Each of us must do our part, wear a mask and socially distance as best as possible.  We want to support you during this unprecedented time. Do what’s right for you. We hope to see you there and totally understand if you elect not to attend this year.

The Irish Tea on Saturday, January 16, was a huge success

The Irish Tea on Saturday, January 16, was a huge success. There was a big variety of delicious tea sandwiches, savories, breads, and desserts. And of course, Barry’s and other teas!
Bruce gave a ten-minute tutorial on the Gaelig language and had handouts to make understanding the pronounciations easier.
The highlight of the evening was a charming presentation by Lauryn with an interesting slide show about her great grandfather who emigrated from Aughavas, County Leitrim, Ireland and made his way via Quebec, eastern Oregon and then to Portland. Lauryn read a poem that her father wrote about his grandfather, Pat Lee.
The other highlight of the evening was a most interesting and educational presentation by Nora who had studied in Ireland recently. She talked about the education system in Ireland and how it differs from the U. S. Her experiences in sharing an apartment with three Irish students at the University of Galway were delightful.
The All-Ireland Cultural Society appreciates these two young ladies and thank them very much for their presentations.
