The Irish Tea on Saturday, January 16, was a huge success

The Irish Tea on Saturday, January 16, was a huge success. There was a big variety of delicious tea sandwiches, savories, breads, and desserts. And of course, Barry’s and other teas!
Bruce gave a ten-minute tutorial on the Gaelig language and had handouts to make understanding the pronounciations easier.
The highlight of the evening was a charming presentation by Lauryn with an interesting slide show about her great grandfather who emigrated from Aughavas, County Leitrim, Ireland and made his way via Quebec, eastern Oregon and then to Portland. Lauryn read a poem that her father wrote about his grandfather, Pat Lee.
The other highlight of the evening was a most interesting and educational presentation by Nora who had studied in Ireland recently. She talked about the education system in Ireland and how it differs from the U. S. Her experiences in sharing an apartment with three Irish students at the University of Galway were delightful.
The All-Ireland Cultural Society appreciates these two young ladies and thank them very much for their presentations.

THIS Sunday – Teada from Ireland in Concert with Brian Cunnigham

Téada presents “reAwakening” NOT TO BE MISSED! Tickets available at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2493640

Inspired by the remarkable artistic flourishing of the Irish at home and abroad in the 100-year period from 1916 onwards, reAwakening sets historic musical and song material beginning from the early 20th century to a backdrop of archival video footage and still images from the 1916 Rising.

An EPIC traditional band – Oisin Mac Diarmada, Sean Gavin, Brian Cunningham, Patrick Doocey, Seamus Begley  and Tommy Martin – with a truly worldwide reach, Téada has appeared as a frequent headliner at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Russia, the Middle East, and Australia. Highlights include a 30,000-capacity stadium concert in Brittany, along with performances at Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia, Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada, Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, and an extensive 7-week tour of Japan and Taiwan in 2014 playing to audiences of 40,000 people. The band recently received a Yeats 2015 WDC Funding Award for a show production celebrating the Sligo-inspired poetry of W.B. Yeats. Téada’s latest addition to the line-up is legendary West Kerry singer and accordionist Séamus Begley, winner of 2013 TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year.

January General meeting and tea social

Come and Have Tea with AICS on January 16

The popular Irish tea party will return at the January 16 general meeting.  The time and order of the meeting are different from other months.  The tea will start at 6:00PM.  The Genealogy Committee will meet at 5:00PM, an hour before the tea.  After the tea there will be a short business meeting and a program.

The Program Committee encourages members to bring typical Irish goodies such as scones, soda bread, and dainty sandwiches to add to the selection.  To make the tea more authentic, all tea served will be popular Irish selections.

Please bring your own cup and saucer or mug.  There may be a contest for the prettiest, most Irish, funniest, most unusual mug or cup.

The program after the business meeting will begin with Bruce Kenny resuming Irish language lessons.  Lauren Devenport will give a presentation on her ancestry, and Nora Fogarty will discuss the system of higher education in Ireland.  (Please note that our presenters have the same surnames as two of the AICS officers.)

The meeting will end with the singing of the “Soldiers’ Song.”  We have a few copies of the lyrics.  Bruce included the lyrics in his handout from his Irish lesson in September.  Please bring these to the meeting.

We will see you at 6:00PM on January 16.  Don’t forget to bring cup and saucer or mug, the song sheet for the “Soldiers’ Song,” and Irish goodies!
